Meet Kelsey - Connor and Co. Wedding Planner, Wedding Design and Floral Curator | Vendor Highlight Mini Blog Series | Tennessee and Pennsylvania Wedding Photographer

Now in Beechtown!.png

Happy Monday darling friends!

I am currently sitting in a cute coffee shop in Nashville cranking out a bunch of work (ie editing, answering emails and finally writing a new blog post)! I’m in Nashville working with my girls Collins and Megan — shooting for their blogs and have some down time. Going some place new and just sitting down, people watching, networking with new people and cranking out some work can be really energizing! Yay for a productive and fun Monday!

In December when I was brainstorming what sort of blog posts I wanted to incorporate into my brand this year, I came up with this fun mini blog series idea that I am excited to introduce to you! I am calling it the Vendor Highlight Mini Series! As a wedding photographer, I have the privilege to work with so many amazing, crazy talented people (or vendors) and I thought to myself, “you know, as a bride planning a wedding, a blog feature might be a fun way to learn and “meet” other vendors in the wedding world!” It is also a really great way to support my fellow creative friends and feature their hard work/small businesses!

My first Vendor Highlight is my dear, sweet friend Kelsey! She owns and runs her business — Connor & Co. Wedding Planning, Wedding Design and Floral Curator. Let me tell you, this girl is extremely talented, she has a lot of drive and gumption and will go so incredibly far with her business. She has so many dreams, goals and vision for Connor & Co. I consider it a privilege to be her friend, watch her continue to blossom, work along side her and see her go leaps and bounds with her business.

I sat down with Kelsey to ask her some questions about Connor & Co. — what it is exactly that she does, where she’d like to be in 5 years, what she loves about being a planner and floral curator etc. I hope you enjoy reading and learning more about Kelsey and Connor & Co.!

Mary Kate: Tell me about your business? What about your business do you love the most?

Kelsey: I love the freedom to be creative. I have a background in business as well, so getting to use that, while being creative is a lot of fun. I love meeting new people and helping them. Connor & Co. allows me enjoy all those aspects.

Mary Kate: What inspired you to do this; to start a business and go full-time with it?

Kelsey: I love all the aspects of owning a small business. As a bride, your wedding day is a day society deems the most important day of your life. It is stressful. I love helping people and being a part of the creative process and help them make decisions. I’m the friend that won’t grow tired of hearing you talk about your wedding plans/dreams. I want to help you bring your vision to life!!

Mary Kate: What are some of your goals for this year and for the future?

Kelsey: My 5 year plan: I really want to add business coaching to my business. As a wedding planner starting out, for example, I didn’t have someone that could tell me exactly where to go to get a business license, how to run a business, or where to get my whole sale license etc. I would love to offer a place for creatives to find those answers and tools to succeed. I want to be the planner that other vendors can come to and ask questions and learn from. One of my goals is to build a community, a place where someone feels welcomed and can learn — no matter where they are at in their business. As creatives, we really do need an outlet for us to all come together and support one another in the business realm, creative realm, etc.

Mary Kate: What are some questions that you get from brides inquiring? What specifically do you do?

Kelsey: I help with brides’ create their wedding day timeline. If a bride is undecided on her color scheme, I help her nail that down. I also help her make decisions in general about her wedding day. One way I do that is create mood boards of inspiration. I will help with the floor layout, too. I am one of few wedding planners that leave communication between me and the bride open, meaning the bride may email me as much as needed throughout the wedding planning process.

I also offer Add On items to the packages I offer : Vendor meetings, Tour the venue place again, Visiting rental places etc. I also help brides’ with budget management and/or help them set a general wedding budget. I offer Invitation management – take the invitations to designer and calligraphy, keep up with RSVPs.

I hope this was a fun little interview that was helpful for you as a bride! Kelsey truly is so much fun and will do an amazing job bringing your wedding day and floral dreams to life!

Connor & Co. books weddings that hire them for Wedding planning, Wedding design and Floral Design.

xoxo, MK

A Simple Guide to Help Wedding Day Portraits Go Smoothly | Pennsylvania and Tennessee Wedding Photographer

A-Simple-Guide-to-help-wedding-day-portraits-go-smoothly

Let’s be honest, family portraits on a wedding day is probably the least favorite part of the wedding day. If is not organized and there is no direction, it can take a lot of unnecessary time and can be quite stressful for everyone involved. Here’s the thing though, it doesn’t have to be that way! While it may not be your favorite part of the day as a bride or groom, there are a few ways to make it more enjoyable and fun!

As a photographer, I’ve learned from a few wedding day family portraits not going the way I had hoped: they were chaotic, unorganized, me + the bride/groom + parents scrambling to find family members, and everyone being stressed out. I’m putting myself out there right now to say it was partially my fault and learning and growing as a photographer.

I took what I learned from the not so great experiences to make wedding day family portraits a fun, stress free, organized, time efficient and (hopefully) enjoyable experience for everyone! When I meet with each of my brides/couples before the wedding, there are a few things I ask/strongly encourage them to do to help with family portraits.

  1. I ask them to make me a Family Shot List. I ask them to include names of every family member that will be participating in family pictures. People like being called by their name, not just “Hey, Bride’s grandma”. This list is the first thing you need to help family portraits run smoothly and efficiently.

  2. I strongly suggest the couple to assign a good family friend or extended family member from both families to help with the family portrait time. Ideally someone who knows or is somewhat familiar with names and faces of the family. During family portraits, I give the Family Shot list to this designated person. It is their job to read off the list, find those people who are needed for the current picture and the one following it next. This has been a game changer. It not only saves time, but it saves from me, my couple, or their immediate families from tracking down everyone. Now what was chaos (sometimes is organized chaos — LOL), but that one change suddenly makes family portraits way more enjoyable for the couple and their immediate family. They can focus on the pictures being taken and being present instead of half smiling while working about who is and isn’t around for the next picture.

  3. When at all possible, I always ask my second shooter to help me arrange family members. People want to feel taken care of. They want to feel that they are truly important enough to take a moment and tell them where they should stand to flatter them in front of the camera. Having my second shooter around to be another pair of eyes and help me make everyone feel taken care of really changes the whole experience for everyone involved. Win win — always!!

I hope these three little tips are helpful to you, whether you are a bride or a photographer! I know they have really helped me and wedding day family portraits end on a happy note! <3

A Classic, Vintage Inspired Wedding at 409 South Main | Jaynee and Miles | Memphis Tennessee Wedding Photographer

jaynee-miles-409-south-main-memphis-wedding-photographer-mary-kate-steele-photography

When I first met Jaynee, her sweet, down to earth disposition and gorgeous red hair reminded me of a character you’d fall in love with out of a Jane Austin novel. She such a genuine and graceful personality that I loved. Her husband, Miles, with his true Southern gentleman charm and politeness perfectly compliments his darling wife. Together, they have the sweetest fur baby who was just as much apart of their wedding day as everyone else. Capturing them and their precious families on such an important day in their lives was a joy and privilege. :)

I personally loved all the classy, vintage touches Jaynee incorporated into their day. As well as proudly adding touches from their Ala Mater — Mississippi State. Check out the cowbells that pop up in a few places. ;)

Fun Fact: The image below — We stopped St. Patty’s Day traffic to get this awesome photo. It was quite humorous and 100% worth it.
